WALK OF LIFE - May 25, 2014 – 30th Anniversary !

By Barbara Kennedy-Executive Director - Cardiac Health Foundation Of Canada

Come celebrate our 30th Anniversary with us. The Toronto WALK OF LIFE is unique in that it offers a choice of SIX different events for people of ALL ages to actively participate in and support the cause of prevention, education and cardiac rehabilitation.

Something for everyone – fun for the whole family. How many WALKS or RUNS amuse and engage the “under 5 year old crowd” with a special dance-a thon program for them and their parents and grandparents? And how many events feature an ‘After Party’ with special gourmet food vendors to tantalize your taste buds with heart healthy creations? NONE - except the WALK OF LIFE 2014 on Sunday May 25th at the Evergreen Brick Works.

Thirty years ago a group of my cardiac patients completed a three mile sponsored walk in Sunnybrook Park to raise funds for the cardiac rehab program, thus beginning the very first WALK OF LIFE. Since that small beginning it has evolved into what is now a national campaign with thousands of patients participating along with their families and friends all across Canada ”, stated by Dr. Terry Kavanagh, founder and cardiac rehab pioneer. Dr. Kavanagh further stunned the world by training seven of his patients to compete in the Boston Marathon, thus completely revolutionizing the idea of exercise and cardiac health.

The WALK OF LIFE event begins at 8:30 am with breakfast sponsored by Kellogg Canada, live entertainment by Craig Ruhnke’s band and coffee from Marigolds & Onions. Roger Petersen, managing editor/anchor CityNews Tonight, returns as our host, introducing the distinguished guests, celebrity mascots and special 30th anniversary surprises. Participants have a choice of doing a 3KM or 5KM WALK or a 1 KM family friendly stroll ( recommended for strollers and wheelchairs); a 5 KM or 10 KM competitive run with prizes ; or an hour long dance-a thon offered as an alternative to those who are not WALKING. Ronno and Liz J-T will lead the interactive Kids-Move program –that has been endorsed and sponsored in New York City schools as part of Michelle Obama’s National ‘Let’s Move ‘ campaign.

The Walk AFTER PARTY begins at 11:30 am in the outdoor pavilion and all are invited to stay and sample gourmet fare offered by food trucks & vendors for a nominal fee(cash only). All vendors have been challenged to present a unique heart healthy menu with a percentage of the proceeds to be donated to the Cardiac Health Foundation Of Canada. Other health conscious exhibitors will also be present with specials and additional kids activities will be offered along with Evergreen Brick Works environment friendly events.
