Ride for Rehab - National campaign conclusion in St. John’s NL on Sept 1, 2011

Alex Holton and Vanessa Parlette cycled 7,260 km for the FIRST ride across Canada for the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada. The intent of the RIDE FOR REHAB campaign was to promote public awareness about cardiac rehabilitation and to advocate continued diligence to prevent risk factors for cardiovascular disease and to raise funds for education and graduate scholarships. Graduate scholarship presentations of five $3,000 scholarships will be made at the CACR conference in Vancouver, BC October 2011.Total amount raised for Ride For Rehab campaign was $33,292.36 to be utilized to further advocate cardiac rehab across the country.

Alex, who received life-saving cardiac surgery and rehab at the age of 23, has shared his remarkable recovery story with cardiac rehab patients at over 16 centres from coast to coast. His journey began in British Columbia on May 29th and he reached his final destination in St. John’s NL on Sept. 1, 2011. Alex spoke with over 100 patients of the Eastern Health Cardiac Rehab program held at Memorial University - Field House at 9:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Room. Mr. Leo DelZotto, President of the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada and Tridel Corporation was on hand with his wife Sandra, to welcome Alex and Vanessa and he presented a cheque from Tridel (a donation of $3 per km for a total of $22,000) Executive Director Barbara Kennedy welcomed the several distinguished guests including Mayor Dennis O’Keefe and MP Jack Harris. Media coverage included CBC, ROGERS, NTV, OCM Radio and the Telegram newspapers.
